2 - Basement Crew

colette is pleased to present Basement Crew, an exhibition of three young multimedia artists selected by Tom Sachs. These three exemplify the countless artists who must find time for their work outside the confines of a regular day job. As livelihood lends itself towards practice, this exhibit poses the question: how does one approach the work day after the work day? To offset the strain of an extended work schedule, artists will often employ humor, variety, and a toy-like playfulness. Add high-voltage and a broad knowledge of materials to these variables and you have Basement Crew: manic and obsessive, otherworldly and handmade. Here is the work that comes after. A lifetime of moonlighting.

Chris Beeston hails from rural North Carolina where he grew up on a farm and never had shoes. He was recently given his first pair by the CEO of Nike. Chris lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Gordon Millsaps invented downhill rusty-tin-roofing skateboarding. He was surprised to find that it hasn’t yet found its way to his new neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY.

Nick Doyle built his first house of cards outside of a Slayer concert. He now lives and works in that house in Brooklyn, NY.
