This spring-summer, American designer Alexander Wang confirmed his status of Fashion Prodigy. With a collection encoded into his athletic chic, street-wear DNA, (and perhaps as fashion mentally limbering up for the Summer Olympics in London), this time around, the designer felt the need for speed, taking inspiration from BMX and motocross. The show displayed a succession of distinctive silhouettes or "gangs", as he described them, in a color palette opposing black to bright flashes of tangerine, violet, and teal. Indeed, we first saw laser-cut mesh bombers that revealed bright polos, followed by nylon cargo couture floral pieces, then sexy race-car intarsia knits, and finally body-con leather mini-dresses. As always, there was very little you couldn't imagine wearing while walking down the street and it all came together with a sense of cohesion and modernity. Overall Alexander Wang's work was fast, young, confident, and far from generic.
